UMOM Funds its Programs Partly with Social Enterprise

With experience ranging from building vendor relationships to project management of multi-million dollar projects, Jesika Streit serves on the corporate event sales staff for the Event Team, Inc., in Phoenix, Arizona. A dedicated philanthropist, Jesika Streit contributes to organizations such as UMOM New Day Centers.

Since its establishment in Phoenix in 1964, UMOM has provided shelter and support services for numerous homeless families. Today, the organization offers temporary residence for approximately 170 families, as well as supplying affordable housing units and program centers.

UMOM relies on volunteers and donors to support its work, but also funds its programs through innovative efforts such as Helpings Cafe, Catering and Market. Founded in 2014, Helpings Cafe acts as an example of the organization's social enterprise, using for-profit business models to support community service.

Every time someone purchases food or coffee from Helpings Cafe, it pays for a service offered by UMOM. For example, buying a specialty coffee pays for dinner for a homeless child. Alternately, purchasing two dozen muffins pays for shelter for a homeless family.
